>WHAT DOES THE RADIATOR DO IN YOUR CAR?
A radiator is primarily a part of your engine’s cooling system. The cooling system also includes a liquid coolant, hoses that circulate the coolant, a fan, and a thermostat that monitors the temperature of the coolant.
WHERE TO FIND THE RADIATOR CAP?
The radiator cap is a pressurized cap that is found at the top of the radiator, usually at the front of the engine bay. Most cars these days have labeled radiator caps. If your cap is not labeled, you can always check your owner’s manual to find where your radiator cap is located. Tip: Radiator caps are usually more oval in shape compared to other caps in the engine bay.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE RADIATOR CAP?
A radiator cap may be small but it is more important than most people think. It plays an integral part in the car’s cooling system. As the radiator transfers excess heat from the engine’s coolant fluid and releases it into the air, it is the radiator cap that prevents your engine from overheating. When the engine coolant reaches a high temperature, the engine expands and fills with pressure. When the engine coolant is pressurized, it will boil at a higher temperature and your engine will run hotter. This is why radiator caps have pressure ratings – it acts as a pressure release valve that opens when it is set to the maximum engine coolant pressure point.
When the engine coolant pressure reaches this maximum level, the radiator cap valve is forced to open, causing the engine coolant to overflow into the radiator expansion tank(s) positioned on the side of the radiator. The engine coolant remains in the expansion tank until it cools down after which it is drawn back into the radiator. The coolant continues to flow around your engine, ensuring the correct engine temperature is kept at all times.
5 COMMON SIGNS OF A FAULTY RADIATOR CAP
