WHAT IS THE HEATER BOX?

The heater box contains the heater core, which is a vital part of your car’s cooling system and is located under the dashboard of the car. It looks and functions like a smaller version of a radiator, bringing warm coolant into the cabin of your car so the ventilation air can be warmed up, whilst also allowing your car’s defroster and heater to work properly. As such it plays an important role in keeping your windscreen and visibility clear while driving, as well as warming up the passenger compartment.

HOW DOES THE AC AND HEATER WORK IN A CAR?

The heater core acts as a heat exchanger: the warmth from the engine goes from the radiator to the heater core. It allows engine coolant to flow through, which is regulated by the heater control valve, and the device begins to get warm. Note: the A/C uses refrigerant, while the heater uses hot engine coolant.

SYMPTOMS OF A FAILING OR FAULTY HEATER CORE:

  • Fog or Film on Windscreen/Windows/Mirrors
  • Sweet smell inside the Cabin (smell of coolant)
  • Coolant on Floor Panels/Wet Carpets
  • Coolant Level Dropping Frequently
  • Cold Air inside Cabin/Weak Cabin Heating
  • Cold Cabin/Hot Engine

CAN I DRIVE WITH A LEAKING HEATER CORE?

We don’t recommend you drive with a leaking heater core, or even a clogged heater core, as it can lead to overheating and cause extensive engine damage. If you have to drive for a short distance, keep your eye on the temperature gauge and pull over at the first signs of overheating.

CAN I REPAIR A LEAKING OR FAULTY HEATER CORE?

If it is only a small leak in the heater core, we recommend simply sealing that leak and leaving your heater core in place. You can get seals and other replacement parts that you need to do the job from Sparesboyz directly or we can deliver them to you (or your chosen mechanic) via our trusted courier service.

If your heater core is clogged, try flushing the cooling system to remove the debris and clogs, and get coolant flowing through the system again. If this does not work, then you will need to replace it. The very next thing you do is to call Sparesboyz!
