BELTS HAVE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS

Belts have evolved along with engines to provide better performance ad longevity. Belts today are more durable than ever, with improved material quality and better designs. Newer engines now have Serpentine belts which combine several V belts on older engines. These belts are much longer and wider and far more durable.

LET’S LOOK AT THE MOST COMMON BELTS FOUND IN A TYPICAL ENGINE

Belts play an important role in the operation of your car’s engine. The number of belts the engine has depends on the age and the design of the engine. Let’s look at some of the most common belts found in typical engines.

WHAT IS A FAN BELT?

A fan belt is a flexible rubber belt connecting the crankshaft pulley and the alternator to the engine cooling fan. It powers the following parts within the cooling system, thereby cooling the radiator and circulating cool air through the engine:

  • The water pump
  • Radiator fan
  • Air conditioning

Note that in some engines the serpentine belt is used instead of a fan belt to power these parts. If the fan belt breaks, the engine will overheat so it plays a very important role.

WHAT IS A TIMING BELT?

The timing belt is a thin, rubber belt on the side of the engine that is attached to the camshaft and crankshaft via several pulleys. It powers the engine’s camshaft, keeping it perfectly in sync with the crankshaft, ensuring the valves open and close at the correct time, thus keeping your engine running smoothly. If the timing belt breaks, the synchronization will get thrown off and could potentially damage your engine.

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATOR BELT?

If the serpentine belt is not powering the alternator, then your car’s engine has an alternator belt. It’s a small belt that is responsible for powering the alternator and without it, the battery won’t stay charged. Depending on the design of the engine, the alternator belt may also power the power steering pump and/or the air conditioning system.

WHAT IS A DRIVE BELT?

Your car’s drive belt is an integral part of your car’s engine. It is also known as a Serpentine Belt in newer engines. It is a reinforced rubber belt that drives almost all of the fundamental car engine parts – it delivers power to the AC, cooling system, power steering, and alternator and keeps the engine running smoothly.
