THE WAR ON EMISSIONS
Governments have come down hard on the auto industry when it comes to harmful emissions and since the 1970s it became law in the US that every car manufactured from that year onward had to be fitted with a device called a catalytic converter to control these harmful emissions. This device soon became almost universally used and is now integrated into virtually every modern exhaust system.
CATALYTIC CONVERTERS EXPLAINED
Catalytic converters are part of your vehicle’s exhaust system and are located between the engine and the muffler. They help to clean your car’s harmful engine-exhaust emissions by using chemical reactions with precious metals (the catalysts).
Typically, most of the “harmful” hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust are converted into “less harmful” carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour. In other words, they convert pollutants like unburned gas and nitrogen oxide into harmless gases.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER MAINTENANCE
These are a few of the most common signs of a failing catalytic converter:
COMMON SIGNS OF A BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER:
- Poor/sluggish engine performance.
- Decreased acceleration.
- Dark/black exhaust smoke.
- A sulfur smell coming from the exhaust.
- Excessive heat under the car
Some of those symptoms can also be caused by failure of other emission parts, so have your vehicle checked by a mechanic when these symptoms become apparent. It may be time to
replace your catalytic converter.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
Always follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule (as per the owner’s manual) and have your car serviced regularly. This can delay problems with your catalytic converter for up to 10 years or more. By keeping your exhaust, emissions and combustion systems in good shape you will minimize the risk of your catalytic converter failing before its time.
Finally, never ignore the Check-Engine light! It could be alerting you to a clogged air or fuel filter that could save you from catalytic converter damage and an entire replacement.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
Money is the main reason catalytic converters are frequently stolen. The three precious metals they contain that aid in the chemical reaction that makes exhaust pollutants less harmful, namely platinum, palladium and rhodium are valuable to metal dealers. The rise in the price of these precious metals results in a higher cost for the converter itself — and higher values for converters as scrap, as the metals can be recovered and sold.
The increasing value has prompted thieves to steal catalytic converters, often cutting them out from under a car parked right on the street, which can also cause additional damage to the car.
There are a few simple steps you can take to protect your vehicle from catalytic converter theft:
- Park your car in a locked garage
- Park in a well-lit area public area with the rear end of the vehicle as close to a wall or fence as possible.
- Have your car’s VIN number etched into the casing of your catalytic converter.
- Weld the bolts onto your catalytic converter
- Use other commercial anti-theft devices that will make it more difficult to remove the catalytic converter.
