WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A CAR AC CONDENSER?

The car aircon condenser is an integral component in your car’s air conditioning system. Basically, it functions as a heat exchanger, converting high-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid by reducing the refrigerant temperature during the condensation process. Heat is removed from the refrigerant to maintain lower interior temperatures. Once the temperature has been successfully lowered, a cool liquid is formed which is released through the car aircon holes.

TYPICAL SYMPTOMS OF A FAULTY OR BROKEN AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER INCLUDE:

A condenser is positioned between the car’s grille and the engine-cooling radiator and can easily become clogged with road debris and grime, thereby reducing its efficiency. It can also fail due to aging and simple wear and tear of the various tubes and seals.

These are the most common symptoms of a faulty AC condenser:

  • The air conditioning stops working altogether
  • Significantly reduced cooling capability
  • Diminished airflow
  • Unusual noises coming from the unit
  • Noticeable coolant leaks
  • Burning smell or foul odour when aircon is running
  • Dashboard warning lights may come on
  • Overheating while idling

WHAT TYPE OF AC CONDENSER SHOULD I CHOOSE WHEN IT IS TIME TO REPLACE IT?

There are three types of AC condensers to choose from in the automotive industry and Sparesboyz stocks them all: serpentine, tube, and fin, and the most popular parallel flow condenser.

  1. Tube And Fin Condensers (TFC)
  2. Serpentine Condensers (SC)
  3. Parallel Flow Condensers (PFC)

When a compressor fails, the first question for most technicians is whether to flush the condenser or replace it. For tube and fin condensers or serpentine condensers, the internal tube diameter is wide enough to be able to flush material through it to ensure the inside is clean and free of contaminants, but it is not recommended to flush Parallel Flow Condensers – they need to be replaced.

AC CONDENSER PRICE – THE COST OF REPLACEMENT

As mentioned, Sparesboyz Durban and Sparesboyz Cape Town stock a wide variety of AC condensers and all other aircon system components at extremely affordable prices. The actual cost will depend on a number of factors: the type of vehicle, make, model and year of car, whether or not other parts in the AC system need repair or replacement at the same time, labour costs (this is definitely not a DIY job) etc

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR AC SYSTEM

There are some things you can do yourself which can help to maintain your aircon system and prevent having to replace your condenser earlier than necessary.

  • Clean the A/C condenser periodically to preserve the life of the unit. If in doubt, follow some online video tutorials or ask your mechanic when you take your car in for its regular maintenance
  • Clean vents, cabin air filter, and the A/C condenser fan regularly for maximum efficiency.
