WHAT IS ABS?
ABS stands for an Anti-lock Braking System. It is an automated vehicle safety system that prevent the wheels from locking up when braking and avoids uncontrolled skidding. ABS generally offers improved driver safety, comfort, and more vehicle control.
Later technology has allowed for further systems to enhance driver safety, such as providing data for the onboard navigation system, a traction control system, an emergency brake assist system, a hill start assist system, electronic stability control, and the front-to-rear brake bias. It is important to note that none of the above would be possible without the ABS sensors.
WHAT IS AN ABS SENSOR?
The anti-lock braking system uses an ABS sensor (also known as a wheel sensor) to monitor the rotational wheel speed. This information is communicated to the ABS Control Module which then prevents the brakes from locking during a stop. So an ABS Sensor part may seem like a simple car part, but is a vitally important one! If it fails for any reason, contact Sparesboyz for an ABS sensor replacement as soon as possible.
Although you can still drive with a faulty ABS sensor, it is not recommended you do so. Your safety should always come first! For top-quality, guaranteed new and used ABS sensors and other brake system parts at the most affordable prices, look no further than Sparesboyz. Saving you time and money – every day!
TYPES OF ABS SENSORS
There are 2 types of ABS sensors: Passive(no power supply) and Active (with power supply) and Sparesboyz has them both in stock.
WHERE ARE ABS SENSORS LOCATED?
The ABS sensor is usually mounted at each wheel hub/rotor on a four-channel ABS system. In some rear-wheel drive applications, the sensor is mounted in the rear differential. Each vehicle contains varying amounts of ABS sensors.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF MY ABS WARNING LIGHT COMES ON?
The ABS light should come on when you start your car for a brief moment and then go off. If your ABS warning light stays on (or is illuminated at any other time), it means the anti-lock system has been deactivated due to a malfunction. Your regular brakes should work but the anti-lock feature and other functions, such as stability and traction control, roll stability, and hill-start and emergency brake assist, will not be functioning.
This could be caused by any one of the following:
- A blown fuse
- A damaged or dirty wheel sensor
- A broken wire between the ABS computer and the sensors
- A damaged ABS computer
Note: If the red warning light comes on (regular brakes), it typically means your car is losing brake fluid or the brakes are badly worn and you don’t have the necessary stopping power. Both of these situations warrant immediate attention!
